Solar Shingles For Your Roof

Solar shingles have been in the works for decades, but only now are they making their way into homes. Tesla was the first to invent this concept. GAF Energy (and CertainTeed) are also working with the same technology. Some companies are even attempting to create solar shingles that adhere to your roof.

Tesla was the first company to create solar shingles

Solar shingles are a relatively new product. Tesla was the first to offer solar roofing shingles. In 2015, it introduced a system that blends into regular asphalt roof shingles. While solar shingles have been attempted by other companies since then, such as Dow Chemical Company (BP Solar) and BP Solar, it has not yet been able to achieve the level of efficiency necessary for residential rooftop panels.

Tesla solar shingles include both inactive and active shingles. This enables the homeowner to enjoy the solar benefits without sacrificing aesthetics. However, the solar shingles are more expensive than the traditional solar panels, so they are not a cheap option for homeowners.

Cost

The power they produce determines how expensive solar shingles will be. Depending on their efficiency, solar shingles can produce anywhere from 13 to 63 watts. Low-wattage solar shingles need more shingles and a larger roof area. There are two types: silicon solar shingles or thin film solarshingles. Thin film solarshingles are more affordable than other types. While silicon solar panels are comparable in efficiency to regular PV modules they are far more costly than thin film solarshingles.

The cost of solar shingles varies greatly by manufacturer. Solar shingles cost between $20 and $25 per square foot. The cost of solar roof shingles for a 2,000 square foot roof is around $45,000.

Efficiency

Solar shingles are powered by solar energy. When sunlight hits solar shingles, electrons are drawn to holes in the roof that are positively or negatively charged. This movement creates DC current. The DC current is converted by an inverter to alternating power. This power is then stored. It can be used as a power source for your home or office.

There are many options for making solar shingles. While some use thin-film technologies, most use silicon-based solar cells. Many of these shingles are easier to install than conventional solar panels. They also can be more flexible and blend in with existing roof materials.

The Lifespan

Solar shingles are an increasingly popular option for new roofs in many parts. These shingles offer many advantages including the ability to last much longer than a typical roof. They also help increase a home's property value. Solar roofs have been shown to increase the home's value by as much as $15,000 according to studies.

Solar shingles can last 30 years but their life expectancy varies. Each manufacturer offers different warranties on their materials. The weather can have an impact on the life expectancy of solar roofs. The life expectancy of solar shingles can be affected by heavy snowfall and accumulations of debris.

Permits

When deciding to install solar shingles on your roof, the first step is acquiring the proper permits. There are several factors that will determine which permit type is needed. Sometimes, the local fire station will require a clearance for the solar array. Other cases may require a historic commission permit.

Applying for a solar permit can take several hours. Third-party services can be hired to help you complete the paperwork. This will save you time. The average application is between 10 and 15 pages. After the application has been submitted, the utility company and AHJ will examine it and inform you if there are any problems. You can resubmit an application that is rejected. Often, permits take a few days, but it can take as long as a week.
